The design challenge for this project was to propose a user-friendly experience flow and interface for the automated waggon inspection and brake testing app that enable, at the end, the railway undertakings to achieve a higher level of safety and compliance. The insights generated during the research phase allow the product team to define a streamlining pre-departure train preparations process that could help railway undertakings save valuable time and resources and a management interface to support the engineering teams

The Wagon Journey
Together with the product and research team we create a large scale infographic to highlight the macro steps of the journey and highlight the scope of the Train Checker app.
Solution diagram and block frames
Due to the complexity of the topic, the product team, together with field experts, defined a high-level solution flow, and we ran a few brainstorm sections to create some blockframes that helped later streamline the wireframes and high-fidelity designs.

Key feedbacks collected during the
1st round with the Train Checker Customers
✅ The calendar isn’t necessary to be visually prominent because the user only must focus on the daily inspection
✅ Match between system and the real world - The countdown clock looks to much abstract and the purpose of the time is to allow the device to make the reading and the user don’t need to do anything during the process;
✅ Avoid distract the technical - The pressure chart when the loco is connected to the mainline is usually stable and, when disconnected, should not drop 0.5 bar/min.

The final proposal based customer and experts feedback
Train Checker Tablet App
✅ Switch the layout orientation from portrait to landscape for better alignment with the day-to-day usage of the tablet with other existing apps;
✅ With a today based tasks we stand out the list scheduled inspection and status still allowing the user to access the calendar component ;
✅ With a skeuomorphic style the count down timer allow the user to focus on the action of start and when stop the next break test;
✅ The pressure chart was updated, and the question for the user was more aligned with the way the inspector usually analyses the data.
