Brand identity – IONA | Journal of Economics

A branding project done for a student-run economic journal at the University of British Columbia.
As a new student run publication, Iona and the Journal of Economics sought to distinguish itself from the myriad of other student journals and publications already existing on campus.

The naming was split into two distinct parts: Iona and the Journal of Economics. Named after the new building housing the Vancouver School of Economics, Iona was a simple, clean, unaffiliated, and catchy name that perfectly suited the purposes of a new publication. This was complimented by the clean and professional Journal of Economics that would lend the publication authority where it might have been unknown otherwise.

The logo and branding was designed to invoke the patterns and simplicity of geometry and outer space. Once used to depict spiritual inquery, the symbol of the Maltese Labrynth was coopted to depict intellectual inquery. This harmoniously complimented the motto of "To know the causes of things" and gave another touch point back to the physical location of the Vancouver School of Economics where the labrynth is based.

This adaptation of ancient symbols was blended along with the motif of space – representing out-of-the-box thinking and exploring the next frontier.

All of this was complimented with a strong set of fonts: Aqua for headings, Didot for subheadings, and Hoefler Text for the body.
