The Project
In early 2011, CampMinder came to Ronningen Design, where I was working as lead designer, and asked if we could create a magazine for them. At the time, CampMinder worked with over 250 summer camps across the United States and one of the benefits they advertised was their familiarity with some of the best ideas in the industry, gathered from regular contact with so many of its leaders.
In order to share and demonstrate some of that knowledge, CampMinder chose a familiar medium — an annual magazine. It was a bold step for them, a company dedicated to web-based applications from its inception, and the first project of its kind for Ronningen Design. Although the company had done some graphic design before, its main service was web design. I was the only graphic designer on staff and most of the layout and all of the custom illustration fell to me. I produced four magazines for them between 2011 – 2014.
A wide variety of content was delivered for each of the four magazines requiring equally varied layouts, while the overall visual consistency of each magazine was maintained. Following completion and approval of each magazine, the files were submitted for printing. I personally reviewed the following proofs and watched the most complex signatures role off of the press before being shipped off to the bindery for perfect binding.
A selection of pages from the four volumes are shown below. All illustrations shown are original to myself.
Final Front Cover
Unlike the preceding covers, the final was created entirely in Photoshop, drawn and then colored using a Yiynova MS19U tablet display. Various stages of the illustrations progress are shown below.
Front Cover Detail
The overlapping colors in the red-headed director's plaid shirt remains my favorite detail in this illustration.
