Stools are a widely used seating solution with a common problem... They are uncomfortable! Most people have trouble sitting on stools for long periods of time due to the lack of back support and different sitting positions. The solution was to design a stool to be less static and more fun to use.

Through conceptualizing, sketching, and model making, I realized that a moving component would be the best way to eliminate discomfort and increase user interest. I experimented with tipping and spinning features, but ultimately I realized that springs would be a great way to keep the user active and stimulated while using this stool.

The spring stool is constructed of a pine seat and white oak legs all turned on a wood lathe. The steel springs are repurposed, modified springs from vintage bicycles.

The spring stool is a hit with students who spend long periods of time listening to lectures. By allowing the user to fidgit around and shift their weight, they feel less bound to their seat and focused on what is important.
