Placemat/ Mat of Place

Placemat/ Mat of Place, 2015

These placemats or "Mats of Place" are for those who feel cold amongst the metal masses: the urban dwellers who spend too much much time dwelling. By setting down a plate or cup of tea against the mossy mimicry, one can transport themselves elsewhere, amongst the limbs of trees which may be more nurturing than the limbs of those who surround them
Interested in playing on words, I thought of how a place mat could be a mat of a physical place.
Recycled and found textiles were dyed with natural products.
Recycled clothing supplied by Eileen Fisher was combined with locally sourced wool from the Hudson Valley, to emulate textures and objects of nature.
Material exploartion continued, felting and using shibori manipulation on an EIleen Fisher sweater.
Final placemat/ mat of place, emulating a lush mossy environment
