ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEM OF RIO LEÇA
The whole environmental system of Rio Leça features the north east area near Matosinhos.
It extends over a  30 Km area, from the river mouth to the inland and represents, after Rio Ferreira and Rio Douro, the third river basin in lenght.
The aim of the project is to join the two hydrogeolological system of Rio Douro and Rio Leça through a green park system including the important junction in Avenida de Boa Vista (from the inland to the Atlantic waterfront, where Castelo do Quejo is located).
The bad environmental impact caused by the huge roundabout close to the coast has been sorted by giving a new aspect to the waterfront: the architectural project is focused on the requalification of the atlantic waterfront and the castle area and it consists on moving the roundabout underground in order to give way to a liveable green area, non for vehicles traffic but for people. This requalification project is meant to increase the environmental value and the historical feature of an high potential area that is been clearly understated over the years especially during the building and infrastructural speculations typical of the 1950s.
