12 Years That Shook and Shaped Washington: 1963-1975

Exhibit Timeline -The design is meant to physically represent the 12 years the exhibit discusses. The vertical orientation is meant to evoke a sense of marching and action, much like the era being discussed, which was marked by protests and change.

Tactile 3-D Model - This model demonstrates to visitors how development, which began during this era decimated entire neighborhoods in Southwest Washington, D.C. The base map, from 1919, shows visitors the numerous houses located in this quadrant of the city. The 3-D acrylic top map is a contemporary map, which shows visitors the large housing complexes and highways that took the places of those homes.

I was project manager for this model. Working with the District Office of Planning, Catholic University's School of Architecture and Planning students, were able to fabricate the contemporary model with a 3-D printer and complete the details in their model making lab. I also worked with the District Office of Planning to obtain base maps. Based on 1919 map plates, I digitally stitched five map files together to form a complete map of Southwest.

Record Wall - Using non-collection record albums, this wall is meant as both a conversation piece, as well a photo opportunity. Since music is such a powerful tool to evoke memories, we want people to use this wall to discuss their experiences from this era. There is also music from the period playing from speakers in the ceiling. This encourages to visitors to linger and (hopefully) sing and dance along. This wall located in the Resource Room, where visitors are encouraged to leave feedback on their experience of the exhibit.

Reflection Collage and Desk - The Education Director wanted a tool for school groups and visitors to reflect of their experiences and impressions of the exhibit. This collage acts a visual aid for visitors to help recall what they viewed in the exhibition. I chose key photos from all sections and numbered them to create this collage. Then, the Education Director created worksheets with corresponding questions for visitors answer. He also did the same for the record wall. I was also responsible for selecting all furnishing and accessories for this area.

Interactive Protest Wall - The Education Director was looking for a fun and low-budget way for visitors to interact in the Resource Room. The solution is this chalkboard wall that asks the visitors to think about current issues that affect them. It's a simple, but effective way for visitors relate the content of the exhibit to contemporary issues.

Window Cling Graphics - These window clings are installed in the lobby entrance. The images are directly from the exhibit and help the tone of what the exhibition is about for visitors.

iPad Interactive Station - This station is where visitors can interact with additional content, not shown in the exhibit. For this exhibit, there are interviews with community activists, native Washingtonians and a scrapbook compiled throughout the 1970's, titled 'What's Happening in Black'.  For this portion of the project, I was responsible for designing the title panels and the iPad jump screens. I also worked with the developer to work out details on the interface within each interactive.
