CFDA Final Project: Fashion Design 2015

Women's Wear, Lingerie Inspired, Spring/Summer 2017

This concept stemmed from using images of cells and organisms seen through a microscope. From here the concept blossomed into mixing actual microscopic sea organisms with the others. I wanted to incorporate an element of fantasy and other worldly aspects. In my research, I found a historic illustrator, Ernst Haeckel. Without actually using his imaginative illustrations on my concept board, I kept his idea of fantasy, exaggeration and wonder in the back of my mind while designing my looks. The final element of the concept came with looking for an inspiration for the structure of the garments. I found this in light fixtures, lamps, hanging or mounted pieces.

The way that my concept came through in my designs was in the fabrics used and the silhouettes and structures I designed. I had laces that reflected the intricate designs seen in the natural images and organisms. The structural shapes and lines of the light fixtures gave me inspiration for the silhouettes and showing the hard lines in lingerie. I showed cut outs on many of my designs which was to push the lingerie side of things, but also to convey that of natural occurrences in the images I drew my inspiration from. Some cutouts and designs in general showed asymmetry to also reflect naturalistic styles.
