Of Freedoms Yet Unattained
Awuor Onyango
The project involves quotes from some of my favourite African writers following a thread/narrative on the effect
of colonization on the current state of the African woman viz a viz rape and other political crimes dealt on her
by the society. It explores the forgotten histories and possible roots of societal misogyny in current Nairobi as
unfortunately inspired by the public strippings of “immodest” women that were rampant last year (2014). The
project takes archival colonial photos of african women and superimposes quotes by writers of African descent
on them to form a narrative around the severe policing of the african female by the people she fought beside for
freedoms yet unattained by her.
