Presented with the challenge of designing something to be sold on Etsy, I started off by gathering some demographic data from the online marketplace. Of the dozens of categories and subcategories of products that Etsy features, two of the categories with the highest buyer traffic were 'fragrances/cosmetics' and 'jewelry/luxury goods'. This data, coupled with the fact that 2/3 of Etsy's users are female, inspired me to design this miniature line of fragrance jewelry.

As I began to think about the direction in which I wanted to take this project, I started to think about ways of abstracting the concept of fragrance jewelry, and thinking of fragrance as a gem. From here, I developed a mood board in order to nail down a brand direction.

 

After developing prototypes for the 'gems', which hold the material that diffuses the fragrances, I started researching materials that are both compactible, and that retain scents for an extended period of time. Through my research, I found that because natural fibers are porous, they are able to hold scents better than synthetic fibers.

 

Kosoma will feature three necklaces and three gems. Each gem can easily fit into and be swapped out of each necklace design. Kosoma also features a harness that can be worn either on the clothing or on a necklace that the wearer already owns.
