FRANCINE FUNKE
ABOUT THE ARTIST
FRANCINE FUNKE is a multifaceted artist whose work ranges from large mixed media wall pieces and installations, to acrylic paintings on canvas, to photography and works on paper, and to her most recent "Mechanical Botanical" Series of limited edition Archival Pigment Prints which was in the New Texas Talent XXIV Exhibition at the Craighead Green Gallery in Dallas. She was a semi-finalist representing Austin, Texas in the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series Competition held at Art on 5th Gallery in Austin. Her work is now exhibited in the Peoples’ Gallery, City Hall, Austin Texas.
Works from this new Series were chosen for exhibition by Bill Arning, director of the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston , Ann Coffin, founder and director of IPC, International Print Center in New York City, and were shown in the Contemporary Arts Fair, NYC. Francine’s three part, site specific, window installation, entitled, “Through the Grass Darkly”, was shown at Mixed Greens Gallery in Chelsea, New York City.
Ms. Funke’s artwork has been exhibited in numerous major museums nationwide. Her mixed media on canvas installation, “Plumes”, which was part of her prominent "Fire Works" Series, traveled to the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Stamford Center for the Arts, Stamford, CT, and the Russell Senate Rotunda on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, where her exhibition was sponsored by Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut.
Among her New York City gallery exhibitions are the Barbara Braathen Gallery (solo), Walter Wickiser Gallery (solo), Vanderwoude Tananbaum Gallery, Phyllis Weil Gallery, and solo exhibitions at the PMW Gallery, the Stamford Center for the Arts, and the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford,CT.
Her paintings have been included in shows at the Aldrich Museum, Parrish Art Museum, Dowling College Art Museum, Hudson River Museum, California State University Art Museum, Discovery Museum, Bruce Museum, The University of Massachusetts, Rutgers University, George Segal Gallery, Montclair, State University, the Contemporary Art Gallery of Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT, and the Center for Contemporary Printmaking.
Her earlier signature pop-up chair sculptures, called “Dimensional Drawings”, were chosen by the legendary, Gene Moore, Director of Tiffany & Company, to be displayed in all five of their windows on Fifth Avenue in New York City
Reviews of her exhibitions have appeared in Artnews, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Splash Magazine, the Stamford Advocate and Greenwich Times, Art, New England, Palm Beach Post, The NY Daily News, the Scottsdale Daily Progress, and Times/Mirror Newspapers, as well as being featured on the front cover of the Art Now, Gallery Guide.
Francine’s artwork is in the collections of the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Agnes Gund, Chairperson of the Museum of Modern Art, Dana Tyler, anchor at CBS News, Mr. Kent Logan, The Aldrich Museum, the Phoenix Insurance Company, Prudential Bach Securities, the Tully Health Center in Stamford, CT, the General Electric Corporation, and Vertrue Corporation and recently 10 works on paper were purchased for the new Stamford Hospital mega facilitiy in Stamford, Connecticut.
Her book, ON FIRE, poem and paintings, is in the library collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the National Museum of Women in the Arts Library, McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, Texas, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Francine has recently relocated to Austin, Texas. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Cornell University School of Art, Architecture, and Planning, and a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Hunter College in NYC, and is listed in Who’s Who of American Women.
