Poster - Dublin Flea Market September 2015

This is a poster design that I did for the September 2015 Dublin Flea Market.
The Flea Market is a like an Aladdin’s cave of strange and fantastic things. When you walk in you never know what you’re going to find. Sometimes you stumble onto something familiar that reminds you of another time, sometimes you find an object so unusual it transports you to another place. That’s the great thing about the Flea Market and where the idea for the poster came from.
I wanted to represent the huge array of treasures to be found and the sense of adventure you get as you wander through the market. The images that came to mind when I was designing the poster were of old illustrated children’s books. They manage to be comfortingly familiar while also being full of wonder and magic. Many of the objects in the poster are inspired by things that have actually been on sale in the market, some of which caught me by surprise. The poster is made of layers of ink drawings that have been digitally coloured, a combination of old and new which hopefully evokes the sense of mystery and fun as you walk among the stalls picking out different objects – you never really know what you’re looking for until you find it.
