Photography
Joanne has enjoyed photography for more than a decade, initially drawing on her upbringing in a foreign culture as inspiration. Annual trips to her Malaysian homeland helped shape a sentiment of displacement, but also an observing eye.
These images evoke feelings of distant wonder, with her subjects often captured in the midst of imposing but strangely nondescript environments. The pronounced sense of scale exemplifies ideas of insignificance and solitude - both common anxieties for anyone, be they a lonely subject, or even an intrepid photographer.
