Maithili Panikar's profile

The Rainbow Platter

We, as human beings, are blissfully unaware of how our activities on land are adversely affecting marine ecosystems and throwing multiple processes off balance. Most of the remnants of our consumption on land end up in the oceans, either in the form of solid/liquid biodegradable or non-biodegradable waste. This pollution of water has had huge impacts on marine ecosystems, not to mention the affect on various other significant biotic and abiotic processes that run this planet.
Agriculture, being one of the most basic practices on land, is responsible for a significant part of the same. Over decades people have adopted non-sustainable and inorganic practices to cater to exploding masses on this planet. These methods were adopted to save time and money by speeding up and enhancing the natural biological growth of plants and protecting them from numerous diseases. This is facilitated by the excessive use of synthetic, chemical fertilisers and pesticides. These toxins, after being used up by the plants, get washed away by irrigation and underground water systems, only to empty into the oceans.
