UNO skate magazine redesign

UNO is an independent skate magazine from Barcelona. In 2012 they wanted to redesign their format and identity in order to adapt to new times. A fresh video channel was added to support content in motion, and the magazine had plans to become an app in the near future. In order to co-exist with all these new budgets, the printed mag had to shrink to a more compact size and its art direction had to adapt to merge all this mediums seamlessly.

The new covers were now specially comissioned to be shot both in photo and in video simultaneously. Readers of the printed issue could go online and watch a 'Behind the Scenes' type of movie about the photographer, the skater, the trick, the spot, etc. (you can watch one of them at the end of this project). In order to combine these elements, the original magazine logo –which fits in a square grid– got implemented inside a QR code which, in turn, sent the reader to the video link on their smartphone or tablet.

The same "pixel grid" of the logo+QR is then applied to a series of icons and patterns that will illustrate the magazine stories, features and regular sections. This language becomes a fitting bridge between the printed and digital world which the magazine now inhabits.
