Encouraging Behavior Change During Video Gaming

This project consisted of field observations, interviews, self-report user journals, and posture analysis. Data collected informed the creation of design criteria and ultimately a concept to correct static posture during video game playing.
I began this project by identifying problematic behaviors involved in video gaming through an exhaustive literature review on the effects that video gaming has on posture. From this information I designed a study to assess the optimal feedback gamers would need to receive in order to successfully change their posture while playing video games. 14 participants were then interviewed and asked to complete user journals documenting their daily video gaming behavior and user personas were then developed.
User research findings informed the design of a new video gaming chair that alerts users that they have been sitting in a static posture for a certain duration of time and encourages them to shift or take short breaks. Several concepts were explored for ergonomics, comfort, and perceived acceptance. The final concept was chosen based on existing market products and its similarity to an office chair.
