Komaza Magazine
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2010 to Present
MIT's International Development department sends students abroad to use their engineering and management skills to solve common problems in developing countries: obtaining clean water, finding sources of energy, helping farmers' efficiency, starting microfinance providers, and more. This publication is meant to convey their efforts to the rest of the MIT community, in an effort to recruit more talent and promote their message.
The student staff desired a look that was colorful, fun, and humanistic without appearing too rough—lest it appear "primitive." I used bright colors that reminded me of food from the various countries: paprika, curry, cilantro. I looked at textiles and hand-drew patterns to decorate pages.
I'm also developing a website that will continue the current site's purpose (downloadable PDFs of back issues) with added features of social media integration, current events updates, article search, and expanded photo galleries to show off images that didn't make it to print.
