Journal Covers
On the cover of scientific journals
Sometimes it is all about who you know...but it helps when who you know trusts you to do nice work. The editor of the Journal of the American Ceramics Society (JACerS) was a faculty member in my department at Penn State. Working with the faculty member, I had the privilege of creating artwork or 'doctoring' images for the scientific publications of JACerS, nature materials, and Polymer Chemistry. Cover images don't always get accepted by journals, but they still look nice in a portfolio!
For the JACerS covers, I was normally supplied an image from the writer of the feature article. Then I 'doctored' the image and prepared it for print.

For the June, 2010 JACerS cover, I was asked to 'doctor' a photo of Tony Evans for a tribute issue. Tony is a loved and missed contributor to the materials and ceramics communities. The image I was supplied was low resolution and quite small. Knowing I could not 'doctor' the image for the cover, I made the decision to draw a portrait of Tony Evans. I photographed the portrait into digital format, and used Photoshop to process the image for print.
For this cover submission to nature materials, I had to produce an abstract image that communicated a newly discovered type of symmetry called rotosymmetry. I used a fractal program to create the image.
For this (second) cover submission to nature materials, I had to produce an abstract image that communicated a newly discovered type of symmetry called rotosymmetry. I used a fractal program to create the image.
For this (third) cover submission to nature materials, I produced an illustration that communicated a newly discovered type of symmetry called rotosymmetry. Adobe Illustrator was used to create the cover artwork. Sadly, none of our submissions were accepted for the cover of nature materials - another article was featured on the cover.
I did not get many opportunities to photograph an image for a cover submission, so when a faculty member asked me to shoot an image for a cover of Polymer Chemistry, I had no problem obliging! This cover printed in January, 2012.
