Pecinan | Vernacular Typeface

"Pecinan" is the name of typeface I made for final project in Typography class. The brief is to make a vernacular typeface, and I choose Chinatown / Chinese as my concept, because we all know that Chinese civilization has begun and spread worldwide from it's origin (China) for a long time, and it affect many countries including Indonesia. Whether we realize it or not, "Chinese" has affect our lives in may aspects: architecture, manners, thoughts, etc and it happens because the acculturation has happened for a long time, so yes because of that we can call it "vernacular".

Characteristic of this typeface is the thick stem and sharp terminal, both of them are inspired by Chinese basic stroke and their temple. Chinese used to write with brush, so that the bold stroke comes from and we can see that in every Chinese writing. For the sharp stem, in Indonesia we can find sharp edges shape from the roof of every Chinese temple here, so that's very identical with the sharp stem I used in designing the type.
