Moanin' Heart
This print is the companion piece to "Orchids & Skulls" .
this time I found the original sketches so I can show the starting point to the creation process.
Sketching / Bocetaje
The sketch was firstly done by hand and the vectorized for maximum accuracy in the printing of the film positives.
The first sketch was made by hand and traced over.
The green color is used as a basic form sketch and the pencil is for detailed drawing.
I traced over the first sketch with ink on wax-paper tohave a beter start on the vectorization.
The ink also serves to make the lineart thick enough to be reliably printed. Also, the thickness gives me about 1/4 of a mil on eitheer side to play with the registers on the lineart.
Film Positives / Positivos
The film positives were done for the background color, details and the line art.
You can see some changes in the lineart, mainly the change is in the letters, as they did not play along when I tryed to vectorize the sketch.
A banner was added in the base color as a way of encapsulating the writing.
The trickiest part to print was the background detail on the drops and the streaks of blood. The tiny lines clogged up so quickly that I didnt realize the first couple times the line wasnt printed correctly.
Prints / Impresos
The prints were done as the "Orchids & Skulls" ones in matte card-stock in beige and dark gray.
The base color was chosen to be a bright green matte color as it offers great contrast paired with the previous violet of "Orchids & Skulls".
The lineart was printed with a glossy black ink that gave a good body to the print. The matte green around te glossy black looks amazing.
I ran out of green at some point so I printed a couple with just the line art over the card-stock.
The streak of blood was tricky to print, adding that to the tight registering it was rewarding to see it done correctly.
In the end the streak was not a mayor breaker in the overall esthetics of the print, but it was quite rewarding doing it right.
