The Age of Exploration- A print collection

Color Board
As the collection embraces hope and passion through exploration, a wide range of saturated hues were used. A gamut of dark navy and teals represents the endless days in the ocean. Bright terracotta orange symbolizes the explorers’ passion to find spices and a new trade route. Light pastels represent certain topographical maps that where created during and after the travels. Parakeet and chartreuse greens characterize the tropical forest of the Bahamas and violet was selected from the grapes that Spaniards took along in their travels to the New World. Accent colors such as bright crimson, fuchsia, magenta; watermelon, lemon green and yellow were added to create depth and contrast to the collection
Mixing different brush stokes to create interesting textures, collaging; cutting out, using clay and yarn to recreate stringy and lacy effects were used to explore intriguing drawing techniques. The effect of depth was important throughout this collection to create prints that where visually pleasing and not flat. Different varieties of foods, spices and seeds were also used in early development stages of motif creations, to suggest the diversity of foods and dishes when travelling abroad. These elements also have interesting textures and colors that enhance the surface of a printed textile.

Global diversity has become a modern culture that has emerged in many cosmopolitan cities throughout the globe that usually attract travelers due to their diverse backgrounds. Countries and cities such as New York City, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Madrid have their own diverse cultural influences. This movement however, was not something that happened over night. The phenomenon of migration has led the world to embrace in a route to global exploration. In order to understand the peculiarity of diversity, one must start from the Age of Exploration also known as the Age of Discovery.  This period started in the early 15th century and lasted until the 17th century. The era is characterized as a time when Europeans began exploring the world by sea in search of trading partners, new goods, and new trade routes. Additionally, some explorers set sail to simply learn more about the world. The valuable information gained during the Age of Exploration significantly helped in the advancement of geographic knowledge.
