Plymouth History Centre

The brief for this project was to create a series of communications which would outline the potential of the new Plymouth History Centre. This could be presented in any way we saw fit, I choose a leaflet as the best way to communicate the information given the ease at which you can circulate leaflets.
The Plymouth History Centre is a £24m scheme in the heart of Plymouth.

The vision is to transform the existing museum on North Hill into a cutting-edge cultural centre, three times its existing size, which will open in time for the Mayflower 400 commemorations in 2020.

Together the partners want to create a centre that will enable visitors to get more involved with the archives; a centre where they will find, uncover and engage with the stories behind the collections. They are also building one of the South West's leading contemporary art galleries and a centre that will become the latest key addition to the peninsula's tourism industry.
First thing I did was colour code the catogories which would be contained within the Plymouth History Centre.
After the categories had been colour coded, i set about designing the layouts for the leaflets. The leaflets are a series of eight, one for each category in the history centre. Through what turned out to be an extensive developmental process, i designed a venn diagram style leaflet that is viewed as a whole A2 size piece. The Leaflet contains various facts and information that all link together which can be catogoried under the main category for that leaflet. Through the use of circles i have represented how these seemingly unconnected items relate to each other. With the sizes of circles relating to their significance. Using a key, the viewer can identify the categories that the items fit in to and also learn a bit about each item.

The idea is that  the leaflet will give an overview of the whole collection that is in the museum so that it will inform and encourage the general public to investigate and gain an interest beyond the main pieces in the museum. This could involve them using the archive to find family records or local history and build up a greater knowledge of the contents of the museum and Plymouth's history.
The front page of the leaflet contans the main body of information and graphics. Whilst the back page contains a simplified version of the content from the front page, focusing on the main item of the Leaflet, in this example the main item is Drakes Drum. The back page gives a bit more detailed information on Drakes Drum than what is on the front page.
Here are the front cover designs for the whole series of leaflets. Along with the leaflet there is a series of four posters. The posters celebrate a item from the collection. This is a way to make the leaflet a bit more of a celebration of  Plymouth History Centre. Each leaflet comes with a belly band which packages the leaflet and accompanying posters in a way that makes it a liitle bit more special than an ordinary leaflet.
