Potehi Puppets is a traditional Chinese puppet show brought to Indonesia by Hokkien Chinese immigrants from Southern Fujian. The term "Potehi" comes from Fujian (Hokkien) dialect, which means clothes or gloves (pòo), bag (tē), and performances (hì). Today, Potehi Puppets in Indonesia are mainly performed utside of the temples (such as shopping malls, cultural festivals, etc.). Interestingly, puppet Potehi can only be found in Sumatra and Java, especially in Gudo, Jombang, which is the centre of Potehi puppet-making.

Despite the high demands from both within and outside of the temples, not all demands can be met by the Potehi Puppeteers because of 2 things:
/ Public interest for Potehi Puppet show is very limited to certain circles.
/ There are only 15 Potehi Puppeteer masters, with decreasing number of apprentices.

So then, how can we reignite the love for Potehi Puppet show for the new Indonesian generations?
One of the possible solutions is by combining traditional Potehi Puppets with digital interactive learning media.

Poppeteer (pōpə'tir) is a combination of traditional physical and digital interactive learning media that promotes the art of Potehi Puppets show. Instead of just watching, the users can use the book, puppet, and mobile app to practice the basic techniques of Potehi puppetry and narration.

/ Art Style

Poppeteer’s design style is inspired from geometric Art Deco and Tangram, combined with the symmetrical Chinese architectural design. The geometric Art Deco is used to represent the modern side of Potehi puppetry, which is characterized by the simple and beautiful geometric shapes. For the traditional side, a traditional Chinese puzzle game called Tangram has 7 basic geometric shapes to create objects.

In Poppeteer, the Tangram circle and square form is used together with Art Deco styling as a key element for the design. These shapes are structured in such a way by means of pattern, rhythm, repetition, piling, and transparency.

Finally, the symmetrical Chinese architectural design combines both the Art Deco and Tangram geometric shapes by making the forms for animals, inanimate objects, etc symmetrical.

/ Color

Poppeteer used two-tone color palette, which is using red and yellow gold as the primary color. The red and yellow gold accents represent the Chinese traditional / national color. Meanwhile, the white and dark gray are used to balance the book’s design elements, such as texts. The goal of this is to provide a dynamic but minimalist touch.

/ Typography

The logogram used Art Deco style typeface, which is characterized by the minimalist form and geometric elements of a circle and a square (line).
