User Centered Design

All projects at CBSA followed the User Centered Design methodology – the design is based upon an explicit understanding of users, their tasks, and environments; is driven and refined by user-centered evaluation; and addresses the whole user experience.  The process involves users throughout the design and development process and it is highly iterative. And finally, the team includes multidisciplinary skills and perspectives.

These screens from the Partners in Protection project at CBSA are a great example of the iterative nature of user centered design and how it benefits both business and users.

The first wireframe in this handout was designed “on the fly” during a requirements meeting of project stakeholders and the additional wireframes show the refinement of the wireframes through usability testing with real users. It’s always an absolute pleasure to test project stakeholder assumptions and then see the end results with input from users.
Screen 1: This initial screen was created during the requirement phase of the project and was based entirely on how project stakeholders assumed the application dashboard should function.
Screen 2: Based on usability test results and further user research, I created this design with stronger information architecture and clearer visual statuses.
Screen 3: Further ideation here trying to simplify the experience and guide users through a fairly complex form filling exercise. Both screen 2 and screen 3 were presented in a second set of usability tests
Screen 4: The final screen for round 3 of usaility testing which scored 6 out of 7 for ease of use, efficiency and satisfaction
