INSPIRATION : Lacaux Cave Paintings
Lascaux caves are the setting of a complex of caves in southwestern France famous for its Paleolithic cave paintings. These paintings are estimated to be 17,300 years old and primarily consist of images of large animals, most of which are known from fossil evidence to have lived in the area at the time.
In my initial explorations I tried to replicate the technique of the cave paintings through water colours to get the feel of the inspiration. These included very rough brush strokes and muddy colours.
This exploration was based on bull forms. Basically I overlapped different forms of bulls together to achieve the basic need of a surface.
Using the same line drawing I used different mediums to fill up the forms. To reduce the dominance of the bull form, I used line rendering inside the forms. This surface was done using the same line thickness.
Surface drawn using different line thickness and curves.
This exploration is done using paint brush. This gives a completely different look compared to the patterns achieved using pens.
BACKGROUND EXPLORATIONS

Straight and Diagonal Lines
Here I tried filling the space outside the bull forms i.e the negative space which nullifies the dominant bull forms almost completely. I used straight and diagonal lines to fill up the space.
Spiral Lines
Here I used spirals behind the linear patterns of the bulls. Makes the surface confusing and too busy

MOOD BOARD

I took my surface exploration forward and matched the colour palette with the upcoming colours of year 2012. I chose colours from the winter collection of year 2012-13. The colours used here are very bold and bright. The colours are derived from the moodboard underneath.
