Old trade methods, the treasures of our national history, were somehow forgotten because of the lack in demand from the society and also because the craftsmen did not pass on their knowledge to the next generation. They are a testimony of a time that disappeared in the process of universal modernization and globalization of everyday life.

Singapore is seen as a forward looking, open and cosmopolitan city state where the latest trends are whole-heartedly embraced. Despite the outward appearance of relentless updating, it might come as a surprise to some that we Singaporeans still hold dearly to our roots and traditions. Our customs, food, craft and design are facets of our cultural identity that are close to our hearts.

This project seeks to explore the idea of the falling leaves and the fading traditional crafts. The idea of falling leaves is used as a visual representation of the disappearing trade of traditional crafts in Singapore. Using them as a metophor to the fading and falling of the crafts.

If you didn’t pay attention to the falling leaves, they will just go unnoticed and pass you by. Just like the
traditional crafts, without our appreciation and effort to preserve them, they will just pass you by like falling leaves. Falling leaves are the unwanted children of the tree just like the traditional crafts are the unwanted by-product of the fast-moving and practical society of Singapore.
