Design VI, Staging Transit: East Falls Train Station

The design challenge for this project consisted of redesigning SEPTA's East Falls Train Station in Philadelphia. Currently, the station exists as nothing more than a rail platform with a trailer for tickets and information. We decided to turn the site into a public park and to create a series of "stages" for both literal performance and for the performative ritual of daily life and commuting.
The station can become a place of various activity, with vantage points that create dramatic views and intrigue as one negotiates the winding path. Here, a cafe and a plaza serve as a focal point and a destination near the top of the ascent and the train tracks.
The relationship to the site is a key component of the project. The steps and the ramp carve into the earth, while greenspace is preserved and a park-like environment is created.
We have designed seven "stages" where experiences of watching and being watched are programmed. In some cases this may be a literal performance, such as in the case of a musician, however, less traditional "performances" such as yoga are also programmed into the spaces.
