서울에 가면 서울의 버스, 지하철 노선도가 있다. 도쿄에 가면 도쿄의 노선도가 있고 뉴욕에는 뉴욕의 노선도가 구비되어 있다. 국내 및 해외의 유명한 대도시들은 각자의 개성이 있는 노선도를 갖고 있다. 잘 디자인되어 있는 노선도를 보고 있으면 이용자는 하나의 설레임을 갖는다. 노선도에 보이는 노선 사이의 구조와 연결성이 이용자에게 소소한 재미를 주고 그 지역을 방문하고 싶게 만드는, 이용자를 움직이는 힘을 부여하기 때문이다.
우리나라에서 서울, 부산을 제외한 도시들은 그러한 움직임을 만들어주는 노선도를 갖고 있지 못하다. 관광 도시로 부상하려는 몇몇 도시들도 현재 갖고 있는 노선도로는 관광객에게 그러한 움직임을 만들기에는 부족함이 있다. 각각의 노선도들이 정리가 되어있지 않고 어디서 환승하는지 노선과 노선 사이에 어떤 연결성이 있는지 알 수 없기 때문이다. 서울의 지하철 노선도처럼 모든 노선도를 한눈에 알아볼 수 있는 디자인을 버스 노선도에서도 구현할 수는 없을까 고민했다. 그리고 그 디자인의 힘을 우리나라 지방 소도시에 부여하고 싶었다.
그런 도시 중 하나인 천안시로 정하여 진행하였다. 천안시는 옛날부터 교통의 요지였으며 많은 사람이 오가는 곳이었다. 지금 현재에는 13개의 대학교가 위치하고 있으며 많은 외부인들이 유입된다. 이에 비해 현재의 버스 안내시스템은 낙후되어 있으며 처음 방문하는 사람은 한눈에 알아보기 힘들다. 이에 대해서 고민해보고 천안의 시내로만 운행하는 1번부터 82번의 시내버스 노선도를 살펴보았다. 그리고 외부인들이 주로 유입되는 버스종합터미널을 중심으로 환승, 노선 사이의 연결성을 고려하여 디자인하였다.
