Mission First, MPB School Apatments Installation

Background:
This site specific installation was commissioned by Mission First Housing for a renovation project in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia. Originally a parochial school, the building went through decades of repurposing and decay until Mission First purchased it to renovate for high quality, low income housing. It’s historical status prohibited the removal certain architectural elements. These elements were not in a condition suitable for renovation, so the decision was made to have them serve as a “canvas” for commissioned murals/installations.

Adhering to restrictions on theme and materials, the piece is focused on composition, pattern, texture, and movement. Stemming from Philadelphia’s rich textile history I chose to use fabric instead of traditional paint. The flow crosses the entire “canvas”, while texture, pattern and color shift with the changes in the architecture.
