This is a tank that I decided to design.  I have always had an interest in military vehicles, especially tanks.  I have a tank encyclopedia that I bought and I used extensively to design this tank.  At first I wanted to make the Metal Slug tank.  But in the end it was not functional in a lot of aspects so I decided to make a tank that was more functional.
This is an early sketch experimenting with silhouettes, turret and overall look.  I was trying to take what the Metal Slug tank had and try and make it functional and usable at this point.
These are some accessory concepts for the tank.  I drew a base layer, lowered the opacity and then added another layer on top.  A lot of this did not get used in the final design but some did.  Ultimately the design you see there does not work functionality wise. So as I was modeling I made changes along the way.
The result was this tank.  I opted to make it similar to our modern day tanks.  This design was based on several different tanks including the Challenger, Centurion United Kingdom tanks.  The turret was based on one of the best WWII tank the T34 with some modifications.  This was all turbo smoothed, so I modeled a low poly cage then smoothed it.
As you can see the mesh is quite heavy.  It is meant to be used to make a normal map for a low poly version.  At this point I have not made the low poly version hence this tank is not textured.
I decided to add a hatch and a tank commander poking his head out to give directions to his crew.
For the tread I made one piece and then used path deform modifier to wrap it along a spline to make a complete track.
Some turret detail.
This is the Gatling Gun turret on top of the main turret.  All along I wanted to put a secondary gun on the turret and the Gatling Gun was the best one.  The design of the turret was taken from an anti-aircraft tank.  It stood out for me so I decided to put it on.  I made some slight modifications to it but for the most part the original design is there.
That is it for now for this tank.  I will add more to it later on and do a few touch ups, but for now I am going to leave it be for now.  Like some people I like to step away from a project and come back to it to get a new perspective.
