Estambul es sin duda una ciudad gris. Antigua capital del Imperio Romano de Oriente se divide entre dos continentes. El europeo y el asiático. La antigua ciudad de Constantinopla es una ciudad llena de historia y tradiciones y tiene el récord de tener la tasa de zona verde por habitante más bajo de Europa, sólo 2 metros cuadrados por persona.
Sin embargo, la ciudad hace honor a su tradición de mantener vivo el movimiento de personas y el simpre agitado comercio, y que hace siglos le dieron el título de Capital del Mundo.
Durante el invierno la ciudad muestra su aire más melancólico. El frío, la nieve y el viento cubren la ciudad con una neblina grisácea que viste Estambul de gris.
"Las calles, las avenidas y los barrios lejanos me parecían, como en las películas de gángsteres en blanco y negro, lugares peligrosos. Siempre me ha gustado más é invierno que el verano en Istanbul. Me gustan las noches que llegan temprano, los árboles sin hojas temblando al viento del nordeste, contemplar a la gente volviendo a casa a toda velocidad por los callejones con sus abrigos y jaquetas oscuras en los dias que unen el otoño al invierno. Los muros de los viejos edifícios de pisos y de las mansiones de madera derruidas alcanzan, gracias a la falata de cuidados y de pintura, un color específico de Estanbul y despiertan en mí una amargura y una apetencia por la observación que me agradan mucho. El blanco y negro de la gente que regressa a casa en las tardes de invierno después de que caiga la oscuridad prematura despierta en mí la sensación de que pertenezco a esta ciudad, de que comparto algo con ellos. Siento como si la oscuridad de la noche fuera a cubrir la probreza de la vida, las calles y los objetos, y que, mientras respiramos tranquilos por fin en casa, en nuestros cuartos, en nuestras camas, nos entregaremos a sueños y fantasías hechos de las antiguas riquezas, las construciones desaparecidas y las leyendas de ese Istanbul ahora tan lejos".
