Experimental Typography - Human Sinusoid

Human Sinusoid
Human Sinusoid is an experimental typeface inspired by the director Roman Polanski. Despite all the controversy that surrounds Roman Polanski he is an inspiring and great film director. During my work I decided to focus on what I believed to be the route of the problems in his life which was his traumtic childhood. From this I found out that as a child he found solitude in old German film cinemas where he fell in love with the whole cinematic experience, from the smell of the old cinemas to the flickering light of the projector. Because of this I came up with the solution of visualising the sound of a typeface. I did this using spectrograms based on a spoken typeface that I recorded. This method of producing a visualisation of sound created very interesting results where you can see similiar words of phrases appear to look the same on the sectrograms.
This is a wordmark in my experimental typeface saying Roman Polanski. With this typeface you can start to see the five syllables of the words Roman Polanski and start to build up a rough visualisation of the words.
A visualisation of my typeface which shows each individual letter and glyph visualised from sound. When a complete word is spoken, such as in the wordmark, you can start to build up a similar image from each individual letter placed together. Also an interesting occurrence about my typeface is that the glyphs are considerably larger than than letters, the opposite of a usual typeface.
Here you can see the similarities between the letters D and E when the sound is visualised in my typeface, which if you say out loud you can also hear the similarities.
In this example you can see the similarities between exclamation mark and question mark. Although the first half of the glyphs are different, the later half look very similar as they both represent the word "mark".
A score from the clip above. The film is "chinatown" directed by Roman Polanski. In this clip Roman Polanski himself makes a cameo appearance. The three layers of the type each represent a different persons section of the script. The score is set out in my typeface Human Sinusoid.
Here is an animation of the score above. In it you can see how my typeface interacts with the sound and start to visualise the images with the words.
