Urban Mobility India

The visualization attempts to create a snapshot of how Indian cities look & feel like from a mobility perspective. It is essentially a data-driven identity for different Indian cities, which moulds various mobility factors into appropriate visual representations. The dataset was provided by Urban Mobility India, Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India to visualize How India Moves.
Based on this theme, the mode share percentages of different cities stood out to me in the dataset as they were quite in contrast from each other. It became the central point of investigation for me to understand and depict how and why Indian cities move the way they do.

In order to find patterns and underlying causes, I started co-relating these mode share percentages with road accident deaths, population density, trip length and emission levels. There was no obvious co-relation that I could find but the contrast between private & public transport and emission levels of each city became an interesting theme to hold on to.
As I started juxtaposing the gradients for emission levels with the mode share radar charts, a unique abstract form for each city started appearing that immediately gave a sense of how that particular city has been moving. The size of the circle was coded to average trip length as this is what an average daily commuter would perceive the city as, and population density was depicted by the density of concentric circles to give a sense of how crowded or dispersed the city was.
The graphic for each city can be analyzed individually to gather insight about the particular city, can be used to compare between different cities, or they can be taken as a whole to create a picture of how urban India moves.
