I had this dude unwrapped and waiting in Mari for over a year,  Got the Zbrush file at Zbrush Central, sculpt by very talented Nick Zuccarello. He was very kind in donating his ZBrush sketch to the CG community. So a big thanks to Nick for the model.

Listen to their 'bonk' calls when you go through the images, thanks to Pobblebonk Dam by Marc Anderson.

Rendered with Arnold for Maya (MtoA). This is the first time I am using a sub-surface shader for a creature, especially the one without a lot of thin translucent skin. However it was necessary as I wanted that mix of different skin layering feel on it.
The sub-surface layers were graded from the albedo (raw diffuse) maps.
A Spider Bite

A simple lighting in Maya with Arnold and the rest was developed in Photoshop. I wanted that film photographic look, something you might get from a Kodak film roll and vintage Olympus SLR camera.
Half way through texturing this image was revealing itself to me in my mind, gave a purpose to texture him even further. All in all, loved doing it.

The spider model is from Bad King's insect pack. The alien hand is from Bad King again, from their monster pack. Contributed to them by Mehmet Thyke Getinkaya. As always a huge thanks to Bad King and their contribution to the CG Community.

Texture look development motivation & inspiration

I never start texture painting without making a plan or thinking ahead. Same process with this asset however I was going in circles and nothing I did was satisfying. A huge mental block, as this was Nick’s practice sketch and I wanted it to be a finished piece and not look like a practice work in progress of some sort. Frustration to the point of giving up, I took a step back and expanded my search and looked at tons of concept art. One really excited me (a cartoony dragon) and I took it as my base colour, went on from there, aided by Mother Nature for both detailing and few inspiration. I climbed over the block and I am glad I did – ‘cause I tremendously enjoyed painting this.

The eyes are completely inspired from gecko's cornea and the reason to do so is because I wanted him to be a creature that sees well in the dark and gecko's eyes functions in some very insteresting way, which I thought if attributed to this character it might go really well. I think that's aboiut it, rest of the piece just fell into place as I contiuned painting.

I am not really sure what Nick might have been thinking when he created this character in ZBrush, well for me, if this creature were to roam Earth in the present - I would stay away from it even though its an insectivore.

Thanks for stopping by :)
