The Tri-City Metropolitan Railway Rakoczego Station

Modern, rapid and environment-friendly trains will solve transport problems of the residents of the Tri-City and the region. Thanks to PKM, everyone will get to the Metropolis easier, and tourists will get easier to Kaszuby. An additional benefit following from the said investment is considerably shorter travel time from the centre to the airport, as the travel time on the section from Gdańsk Central Station to the Airport is estimated at about 25 minutes, which will let us avoid stressful changes of the transport means and travelling by several transport means, which presently takes considerable time to reach these significant target points. Automatically also the system of the city transport of Gdańsk will change, as it will be set on delivering passengers to PKM, which will naturally mean better access for pedestrians to particular stops. The implementation of the project will also be a chance and will create conditions for promoting the city of Gdańsk for instance by using the literary background connected with the output of Gunter Grass in Wrzeszcz, or Weiser Dawidek in the area of Niedźwiednik, as well as using the charms of the park upon water in the vicinity of the planned stop Wróbla Staw.

The designers of PKM are motivated by the goal of connecting distant parts of the Metropolis and the region. Apart from the Design Offices, the following entities take part in the design process: Railway Institute from Warsaw and DS Consulting from Gdańsk.
The intention of the study is to present the possibilities of constructing the Metropolitan railway on the section Gdańsk – Wrzeszcz to be connected into the corridor Kościerski – railway line 201.
The study assumes compliance and complementarity with the renewal project of the Kościerski corridor, which will allow achieving the effect of synergy and will ensure the unique connection of the regional and city function.
As a result of implementing the first stage of the project – Renewal of the Kokoszki Railway – the railway line will connect the following districts of Gdańsk: Wrzeszcz, Strzyża, Piecki – Migowo, Niedźwiednik, Kiełpinek district, Matarnia, Osowa with Rębiechowo, Banino and Gdynia.
The connection of PKM with the railway line Gdynia – Kościerzyna will enable upgrading transport between the Tri-City and the localities lying deeper in the region.
A direct connection of the Tri-City will be established with Kartuzy and Kościerzyna, and in the further place with Bytów and Chojnice.
The scope of the Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway project is made up of two parts. The first includes the previously mentioned section existing until 1945, Gdańsk Wrzeszcz – Kokoszki, the so-called Kokoszki Railway. The second part is a section constructed from scratch and running from the entrance into line No. 201. The key stops for the investment will be the following stations: Abrahama, Rakoczego and Airport.
The project will be subsidized from EU funds.
The end of the first stage of the construction of PKM has been planned for December 2014.
The length of the new railway lines of the first section is 20 km.
