HEAVEN GARDEN
An interactive knitting experiment.
This project was made by me and Gizem Pirincciler (3rd year Industrial Design student in) during the workshop called Eletro Knitting Atelier by Benay Gürsoy Toykoç (Architect/ Instructor) and Osman Koç (Engineer/Interaction Designer).

It took my two days to finish this project. In first day we met with Brother KH-940 (an electronic knitting machine from 1988) and we hacked this machine's mother board (basically it's brain).  We put  Arduino Uno (open-source electronic prototyping platform allowing to create interactive electronic objects.) With this method we were able to print our own bitmap images by using knitting machine.

I'm really interested in Anatolian Graphics (such as motifs) and in Anatoia there is a special carpet motif called "Heaven Garden." Gizem and I worked on those graphics and motifs to create a new pattern. After a deep research, we draw a new pattern in Adobe Illustrator and open it in Adobe Photoshop to export it as a bitmap image. Then we print it out with that machine using conductive rope.

In second day Osman Koc helped us a lot to write codes and to process other methods. We connected our printed material with an Arduino for interaction. Finally when user touches this fabric material user hears some synth sounds related with the pattern. Hope you enjoy...
