Screens for Ventana Symphony

Ventana Medical Symphony
Client: Ventana/IBM

My first experience leading a design for a touchscreen interface was the Symphony, a medical device which combined the operations of processing, cataloguing and preparing for storage biopsy sample slides.

To facilitate the shallowest possible learning curve for technicians, a largely skeuomorphic design was pursued, with physical components of the biopsy sample life cycle replicated on-screen.

Cassettes, for instance, were the method by which samples were collected and stored, so were represented visually on the screen.
Side-screen data was meant to reflect the same typography and hierarchy of physical records.

The slides were represented realistically to reflect the real-world experience of cataloguing individual samples.
Meanwhile, some screens introduced new interfaces which were specific to the system, so these designs were effectively skeuominimalist.

The lightly plastic, embossed effect is intended to visually unite the screens with the casing for the device
