Centro para la recuperación de plástico marino para la comunidad de Guacalillo, Garabito, Costa Rica
Back in 2015 Guacalillo's local community was mobilized by the support of SINAC, MINAE, and the Municipality of Garabito (OFIM and Environmental Management Department). There we implemented a whole training and capacity building system. Following an integrated waste mangement system, the objective of plastic recovery was not only environmental but an economic mean for these families. This stablished a safer collection and provided the basis to generate revenue for the community. The last was very limited that year, yet today (2024) with proper understanding and evolution, it is a system that has been working (at some level) with the support of additional organizations such as ACOS, Mareblu, PNUD and continuos voluntary programs.

The Marine Waste Recovery Center, was an immediate response (2021) to process and store the marine plastic recovered. It is one of the critical infrastructure for the financial support of the families and the recovery of the most plastic polluted beach in Costa Rica.
