Diverse

Diverse investigates an increasing stroke contrast on a humanist sans serif. The three families — Diverse A, B, C — represent an exclusive section of Gerrit Noordzij’s model of contrast (The Stroke), produced with the latest font technology. After six years and several drawbacks, this dedicated project led to 36 fonts, three contrast models, six weights and true italics. All families share the same skeleton, inspired by early humanist designs like Johnston and Gill Sans. This skeleton determines the stroke of the broad-nib pen that shapes the letterforms using variations in orientation. Each family applies a different imprint that defines the stroke contrast — a lively monolinear (Diverse A), a subtle contrast (B) and a high contrast in C. In addition to the contrast variety, Diverse includes an extended list of OpenType features, which replace the calligraphic appearance with geometric forms. The diversity of the typographic system makes Diverse a multifunctional tool — designed both for reading in small sizes (see optical corrections) and chunky headlines.
