"Documentary Photo: Tips by Mads Nissen" - Reflection

In the video “Documentary Photography: Tips by Mads Nissen” he talks the importance of doing good with your camera, keeping it simple and to stay focused. Some things I took away was that documentary photography is empathy. To be able to capture emotions you need to engage yourself to feel the emotions as well. “If your pictures aren’t good enough, it’s because you are not close enough”. With this it is also vital to have balance when documenting difficult stories in order to keep documenting them with rawness and authenticity. He also highlights the importance and power of natural lighting as it influences the atmosphere. To be a documentary photographer you need to have a story of something you are passionate or truly care about. The story comes first then you figure out the visual language that fits it. I think this was good advice because if you are photographing something that doesn’t connect with you it probably wont have a major impact on the viewers either because the initial connection/story is lost through the lens, technique, editing, etc.
