LIFTOFF in 360º – The video

Here a quick explanation from the creator Patrick Rochon:

It’s incredible to have the chance to create and collaborate on such projects. Hooking up with Timecode Lab and Eric Pare here in Montreal, I had the chance to experiment doing light painting in 360 degree. The set up is quite analog, 24 cameras on a ring in 360 exposing at the same time. So you get one picture from 24 different angles. We add all these pictures in a clip, just like a quick slide show and it does the effect of the frozen light and model turning around. The Matrix used this technique and call it bullet time. Now adding light painting is quite challenging. First we have to work in total darkness with the flash lights and light tools on the floor. Then wen I light paint I have to consider that cameras are all around and not create shadows by blocking the light with my body. It’s a new way of working and thinking…

The music was created by Cayce for a previous light painting project but we ended up using an other of his creation so this one was free and perfect for the 360 images. Link to the previous project: http://www.patrickrochon.com/archives/961

It took me a full week of intense editing. I used Adobe After Effects for the fluidity and motion of the images.
