Words are the currency of communication. If you know a discipline’s vocabulary you are better able to listen, speak, read and write. In short, you can better communicate within that area of study. As with any profession, typography has a discipline specific vocabulary. Therefore, Project 2 challenges you to learn and demonstrate your knowledge of that vocabulary by designing a booklet that serves as a visual dictionary illustrating the anatomy of type, and provides supporting definitions in sentence format.
Challenge
The objective of Project 2 is to create a visual dictionary illustrating the anatomy of type and providing supporting definitions. The challenge is to organize the information in an inviting and efficient manner. Additionally, students will develop a graphic key to establish a visual relationship between letterform and definition, set sample sets using the selected typefaces, and finalize the design in black and white and later introduce a second Pantone color. The project aims to enhance students' understanding of typography vocabulary and their ability to effectively communicate through design.
Solution
I approached this project with a modern aesthetic, employing a color palette of grey, white, and purple to ensure cohesion throughout. Using my mom's name as an example, I creatively showcased various typographic definitions across the pages. Each element was meticulously crafted to maintain a contemporary feel while effectively illustrating the anatomy of type. Through this project, I aimed to not only demonstrate my understanding of typography but also to create visually engaging and cohesive pages.
