In a quaint neighborhood, where houses nestled close together, lived bright-eyed Tara Das. Tara was six big years old and full of curiosity and joy.

Right across the street from Tara's house stood a magnificent Ashok tree named Chedi. Chedi was not just any tree; he was Tara's friend. They shared a special bond.

But Amma never let her climb the tree or stay there too long. She worried about the insects and the dirt. Even the older kids who hung out nearby made Amma cautious.

Tara didn't let that deter her. When she wasn't sitting in his shade and reading, she would make drawings of the tree and all the animals and birds that made a home in him.

One chilly December morning, Tara went to visit her grandparents. It seemed like she would be staying there for a while. But Tara already missed Chedi terribly. She longed to see the tree bloom in the springtime.

Amma finally decided to let her climb Chedi when they returned home. Tara's heart danced with excitement as she waited eagerly for the day to come.

However, when they finally returned, her joy turned into sorrow. To her dismay, she found Chedi's mighty branches lying on the ground. Some men had cut him down to widen the footpath.

Tara's eyes filled with tears as she sat on the grass, grieving the loss of her friend. Suddenly, the boys and girls she was warned about approached her. But instead of mischief, they showed empathy.

"We're sad too," they said softly.

Together, they all decided to honor Chedi in a special way. Before the men cleared away the fallen branches, they worked tirelessly to create a campsite from the big wooden pieces.

Amma, seeing the kindness in the kids' hearts, joined them with snacks and drinks. And when their work was done, they engraved their names on the wood as a tribute to Chedi and their friendship!

This was a story I wrote for a Character Design class, in the children's picture book style. Attached are sketches I made for the characters mentioned.

Sihi Barua
Sihi is the name of a character conceptualized by Hima for a class that we shared. I had to create concept art using the brief provided.

(Refer to my Behance project, Dare to Percieve for the full project.)

Sihi is a 21-year-old Indian girl of north eastern descent. She sees the world differently in terms of visuals, her perception of a space involves imagining things as more than what they are, along with the added morph of colours and elements. This visual impairment or boon is a result of excessive psychedelic abuse by her mother during her pregnancy term period, which caused an altercation in her brain chemistry and visual nerve receptors.

She loves insects, the forest, people and the way that they interact amongst each other and their surroundings. She is curious and has an innate need to know how things work.

Main Character Traits:

Smart
Jittery

Most ill at ease when: those he perceives as weak and defenseless stand up and fight back, those he trusts betray him.

How does he behave when he is outraged? Tenses his muscles and uses his physical prowess to get rid of the problem.
An action the character does, which is funny: Sometimes his head jumps out as if it was held on to him like a spring. This seems to be a recurring problem.
