POST OSTIUM | THE NEXT DOOR

Post Ostium, the Latin phrase for “The Next Door,” emphasizes just that. A door is such an essential element of any building but it’s just a door, right? What if we considered this component metaphorically? We use doors in several different ways – it is the forward-facing identity of a building, a first impression of sorts. It is the avenue that points towards something new, thrilling and adventurous. In life we are presented with many doors, coming in many shapes and sizes.

For five months I called Milan, Italy home. During this adventure, my full time job was to appreciate the European way of life, eat delicious food and travel (rough life, I know). I grew particularly fond of the grandeur of European architecture; it stole my heart. I adore the intricacies and intimate details that are specific to each structure. The functional yet artistic elements of the doors are vastly unique. I hope to capture this complexity with this project. These doors commemorate the sights, scenery, sounds and memories gathered abroad.

The illustrations of such facades serve as a reminder that each door we encounter holds challenges, uncertainty, animating opportunities, new ventures, devastating results, growth and life experiences. The Next Door is never guaranteed and will always possess the unknown, waiting with excitement and anticipation.
