300 SKETCHES
I was excited to start this assignment because it gave me the chance to get back into drawing. I had been busy preparing for university the last couple of months and became lazy to pick up my sketchbook and create any art. Since I haven't sketched freely in a long time, this would also boost my creativeness which is useful for future projects.
The next two images are part of the class activity. In the first image, we were challenge to sketch very quickly and were being timed in all our sketches. I used the time to simply draw many perspective and components of an object instead of perfectly drawing one object. In the second image, Hans' line and circle exercise help me with my precision and taught us that combining those elements together creates 3D shapes.
After incorporating a bit of red into my insect page above, I wanted to do segment of colour pencil sketches.
Back to using pencil...
I was really inspired by portuguese tiles because of its floral and geometric patterns.
My friend challenged me to do abstract sketches which I usually struggle with because I always try to make sense of what I am drawing. In this page I drew cubism-inspired blocks and other fragmented objects. Then I drew random blobs that formed a pattern. Then I tried to be more spontaneous and drew random groups of shapes and lines. This page reminded me to not get stuck on little details and made me more comfortable with being abstract.
I used Pinterest to look for furniture to sketch because of my interest in furniture design. I designed some of my own as well.
Below is different traditional architecture styles from around the world. I realised that traditional asian roofs are commonly curved upwards. Some think it is to ward off bad spirits but practically it is to allow more sunlight through the windows or channel rainwater away from the building. I also thought that dome roofs kind of resemble hats.
In conclusion, what I found difficult about this assignment was not the time period given to complete 300 sketches but instead finding 300 things to sketch. So I asked the people around me for ideas and feedback. I was also able to do the same for my fellow classmates' work. Additionally, I constantly had urges to correct every imperfection. Like many others, I have to keep in mind that realism is not the aim of this assignment and learned that once I have presented my idea, I can move on. If I were to do this assignment again, I would definitely sketch more abstraction. I realised that what I draw is an original design and not an imitation of something that already exists, nor am I following any perspective or 3-dimensional rules, therefore there is actually no inaccuracy. I would not be caught up over the details in my sketches as much. I would also try using a pen because i cannot erase mistakes and would have to work with them instead.
