Early Childhood Bullying

This is my senior capstone (thesis) project while studying Digital Design at the University of Cincinnati's college of Design, Architecture, Art & Planning (DAAP).

The intent of the project is to address the very root of bullying by educating children about positive and non-abusive human interaction during the vital “Preoperational Stage” (ages three to six) of their childhood development. By addressing some of the scenarios that children during this developmental stage might face, incorrect interpersonal behaviors can be corrected and healthy developmental growth can be promoted - reducing the risk that children will grow up to become bullies of a more serious nature.

The project takes the form of a child oriented, and child friendly, animated cartoon addresses the challenges of positive human interaction in a fun and educational way. The project was presented as a pilot episode, or short, of an animated cartoon for the Nick Jr. (or similar) television station. The cartoon features characters that children can relate to who will educate children about how bullying behavior is unacceptable.

Character design sketches were completed in Autodesk Sketchbook Pro, all assets were completed in Adobe Illustrator CS4, and animated in Adobe After Effects CS4.

Note: I am aware that the walk cycles for the characters are a bit rough to say the least and the animation lacks a bit of polish - this is not due to a lack of attention to detail but rather a limitation of time constraints for the project.  I will go back and revisit and update this portfolio when I have the chance.
