Project Site:
Jefferson High School. South Central LA

Funded by:
The City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department

Dimensions:
37’W x 11’H x 2.5’D

A commemorative art installation, located within the lobby of an inner city high school auditorium, is comprised of architectural inscriptions and an image continuum that contains photographs of prominent graduates such as Dexter Gordon, Alvin Ailey, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Ralph Bunch. These role models are presented as photographs interspersed with mirrors---so that a student will encounter his or her reflection, illuminating the possibility of similar achievement.

The installation complements the Streamline Moderne architecture of the building, restoring a sense of dignity and purpose to this embattled educational environment.

Constructed of aluminum, neon illumination, hand-cut aluminum letterforms, mounted photographs, and mirrors.
