Through the Looking Glass

One of my favorite novels of all time, Carroll’s classic always captivated myimagination and love for art.  The original concept began as a pencil sketch where I wanted to gather all of JohnTenniel’s original illustrations into one image, something that I had never seen before.

The perspective of Alice is the same as the viewer. Just like Alice, you gaze into the Wonderland's cacophony of colorful and eccentric characters. Upon completing the pencil sketch, I was unsatisfied with the result. I believed that color was essential to convey the magic of Wonderland with such a diverse story and set out to infuse the sketch with color.

I scanned the drawing hi resolution and over the course of the next 3 years, I began to digitally paint each character in Photoshop using my Wacom tablet. The completed file consisted of 52 layers, countless masks, paths and filters. Printed on canvas digitally, the colored finished piece hangs at 2.5 feet by 3.5 feet. I then found an gilded victorian frame to complete the look.
