Rattles

"The oldest musical instrument used for soul retrieval work among native peoples is the rattle, humankind's imitation of rain"... "Most shamanic societies attribute three functions to the rattle: (1) soul retrieval work, (2) cleansing and purifying, and (3) assisting visionary work." (excerpts from "The Four Fold Way" Angeles Arrien pg. 25-26). I began making rattles in 2008 while studying with cultural anthropologist Angeles Arrien. Since that time they continue to be a vehicle for me to express and honor the natural world around me. Each rattle is one of a kind.

Deep red garnet cabochons’ for eyes, small faceted black spinell beads encircle the neck, the gourd is held in place by one green (top) and one black tourmaline (bottom of gourd), peruvian gourd filled with clear quartz.

Black water snake. The snake is emerging from the cosmic egg. Every surface of this rattle has been decorated. It was hand carved, wood burned and painted. The handle grip is made from black tilapia leather on the top side. The bottom side of the handle grip is created from hand pieced/ stitched panels of white leather that mimics the undulating underside pattern of the snake. It is filled with clear quartz crystal. The eyes are smooth carnelian gemstone cabochon's.
