Made for Curiosity: a commemorative alphabet book

New Spirit with Garamond
For the final assignment of a summer study abroad program, "Typography: Then & Now," we were tasked with designing and printing a book which encapsulated our experience and showcased the work we created during workshops at P98a in Berlin and Tipoteca Italiana in Cornuda. Because the focus of the trip was typography I decided to style my book after a classic alphabet book for children. I was specifically inspired by my great grandma’s Alexandra Reader from 1915.

I scanned the original book and used a Photoshop AI feature to determine similar typefaces for my book resulting in New Spirit being used as the display type with Garamond for the body. New Spirit is modeled after Windsor which was released in 1905, an appropriate choice for my inspiration. I use the format of the classic alphabet book for children to illustrate the authentic snapshots of the trip including memories, art created, photographs, and information learned. Into the margins I've incorporated my own notes taken throughout the trip, digitized, to mimic the notes found scribbled in reused school workbooks.
